Located off Lombok's north-eastern coastline, The Gilis is composed by three islands laying next to each other namely Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan. In "sasak" language, the ethnic occupying Lombok island, "gili" means island. They are famous for both beyond and below the surface. Under water they are blessed with amazing diving and snorkelling sites. On the surface they have beautiful quiet beaches suitable for any beach activities you may have in mind. The islands are so small that you can circle each of them in less than half of an hour bike. Motor vehicles are not allowed here. If you do not walk you can hire a "cidomo", traditional horse-dragged carriage, or ride a push-bike which are available for rent.
Regardless of their size, The Gilis are definitely the most popular holiday attraction in Lombok, in fact they are even more popular than Lombok itself. Whilst to come by air you still have to land at Lombok International Airport, many fast boat operators offer direct transfer between Bali and The Gilis. A flight from Bali takes between 15 to 30 minutes depends on the aircraft in use. However Bali - Lombok flights are notorious for delays. Public boat to the Gilis are available at Bangsal, about one hour drive from the airport. The boat trip takes about 15 to 30 minutes depends on which island you are heading to. Public ferry from Bali to Lombok is available at Padang Bai, about 1 hour drive from Denpasar. Ferry takes between 4 to 5 hours, and you will then have to take a car to Bangsal to catch a boat. Fast boats cut the hassle. In addition to Padang Bai, they are also available at Benoa, only a few minutes drive from Denpasar. Direct trip from Benoa to Gili takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
Many visitors to Gili choose to stay overnight in Lombok at Senggigi, a small beach resort town about 20 minutes drive away from the airport. From Senggigi you can charter a boat to take you straight to The Gilis without having to drive up north to Bangsal first.
All the three islands of The Gilis do not have their own fresh water supply. Fresh water has to be transported to Lombok. Therefore swimming pool is an extra luxury and even the most luxurious accommodations do not offer bathtub. Gili villas are in no exception. For economical reasons, most of them do not provide a private swimming pool. Some provide a share swimming pool. And only a few at the top end offer private swimming pool. Each of us have our own view about the importance of a private pool. Our job here is to offer you options and you make ypur choice based on your own personal preference.
